Whether you’re storing just a few boxes, or the entire contents of your home, it can be hard to keep your self storage space looking and feeling well organised. Taking a few extra minutes to get organised before you move your belongings in can help to avoid stress when you eventually need to find something specific in a hurry. Below are our top tips to help keep your self storage space organised.
Keep boxes well labelled
If you label your boxes well, it can be a real time saver when you’re looking for a specific item. While you don’t need to list every single item contained on the box, a general description, such as “kitchen utensils” or “sheets and towels” can be very useful in helping you to know where you should be looking. Be sure to place the label in a spot that you can see easily to get the most from your hard work.
Make an inventory list
If you prefer to know exactly where your belongings are, go the extra step and create an inventory list as you pack your storage boxes. Making an inventory list can be as easy as writing down the items to be stored in a box and taking note of which box they’re going to put in. Make a couple of copies of your list and you’ll be able to locate that item right when you need it.
Store similar items together
Whether you prefer to group together items that belong in the same room or if you would rather put one type of item, such photo frames, in the same box, storing similar items together is another easy way to keep your storage unit organised.
Position items you’re likely to use often at the front of your storage unit
To avoid needing to constantly rearrange your boxes or having to clamber to the very back of your storage unit, place the items that you’re more likely to need in the near future closer to the front of your storage space. Working with the same idea in mind, keep the belongings you’re less likely to use at the back of your storage unit.
Create a floor plan
While you’re moving your belongings into your storage unit, have a piece of paper and a pen on hand to create a floor plan of where each box can be found. It doesn’t need to be a masterpiece, but even a rough plan can help you find specific boxes quickly and easily.
Leave yourself enough room to move
Make navigating your storage space a whole lot easier by leaving a pathway through your unit when you first move your things in. It’ll make accessing your belongings easier, help you to avoid moving boxes around unnecessarily and leave some room for airflow too.
