What does it take to achieve athletic excellence?

Proudly sponsored by Rent a Space, Australian professional road cyclist and Olympian Rachel Neylan is currently competing for Team Cofidis on the UCI World Tour racing circuit. Here she shares her insights into how she has remained on track to achieve her dreams.

Prior to life as a Professional cyclist, with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Physiotherapy from the University of Sydney, I worked as a sports physiotherapist with some of Australia’s World Class athletes.

In a bold leap of faith, I decided to forge my own path from a Sydney-based physiotherapist to World Championship Silver medalist road cyclist in just five years.

Twelve years later, I continue to produce world class cycling performances and I have been fortunate to be supported by Rent a Space Self Storage for the last eight.

While on a relentless quest to achieve my potential, I have discovered what it takes to formulate a world class athletic pathway with great longevity.

The pursuit of athletic optimum throughout my career is an embodiment of human capability to make bold decisions, take opportunity effectively, execute refined plans and use resilience in extraordinary ways in implementing both the art and science of high performance.

Born exuding enthusiasm, energy and inspiration, I enjoy the process of empowering people to achieve their own goals using this well of knowledge and experience.

My natural disposition is to share insights, experiences, and lead by positively influencing others to achieve their goals in sport, health and longevity. The three main pillars being exercise, sleep and nutrition.

The reality is that everyone is an athlete in their own right, in pursuit of their meaningful life goals.

Athleticism seems glamorous but it involves focus, deep hard work, sacrifice and a ton of resilience. Self reflection and vulnerability are always the cornerstones of the upward trajectory.

The willingness to be uncomfortable, to sit with these aspects for long periods of time in pursuit of the process, not the outcome is where the magic happens.
